My Favorite Jobs

As a contractor, I’ve enjoyed a long and happy career in a field I dearly love. I’m very proud of the work I did for these companies. The experience was wonderful, and I’d happily work for them again!

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • I spent 2.5 years at the Chicago Tribune teaching the writers and editors a proprietary new editing system called C-TEXT. I also taught their graphics department Adobe InDesign when they migrated their page layout operations from QuarkXPress.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • I taught the graphic designers in the DiscoverCard Chicago office to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

ART DIRECTOR • I worked with this international petroleum commodities broker to update their branding and do a general redesign of their website.

CONTENT DIRECTOR • Cincinnati radio magnate Ross Love hired me to design the prototype for  a magazine devoted to haute couture for women of color.

LEAD PROGRAMMER • As part of the merger between First Chicago Bank and Bank One, my team designed a training simulator to provide new hires with a non-destructive environment in which to learn their new transaction management system.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • As an instructor for Grumman, I trained their graphic designers to create interactive, 3D animated presentations of aircraft and missile systems.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • When Northwestern University decided to develop a curriculum for Digital Media, I was hired to provide Adobe training to their professors and to help with the development of the curriculum based on my employer’s (Ascend Training) course syllabus and methods.

PROJECT MANAGER • As part of the Ogilvy One Interactive Division, my team worked with the Marketing team to create animated content, web advertising, interactive site content, site designs, and web-based applications for both internal and external clients.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • For this Spanish-language newspaper, I taught their graphic designers Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign entirely in Spanish.

LEAD PROGRAMMER • I worked with TD Ameritrade to design a simulator of their online trading system to help new hires learn how to manage their trades in a non-destructive offline environment.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • When Northwestern University decided to develop a curriculum for Digital Media, I was hired to provide Adobe training to their professors and to help with the development of the curriculum based on my employer’s (Ascend Training) course syllabus and methods. I only got to work with Northwestern and UIC, but Loyola and the University of Illinois, Bloomington/Normal also worked with our company to help them develop a robust curriculum for Digital Media.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER • As a designer for USAFE, I used Adobe Illustrator to draw parts of missile systems for output to a plotter. However, due to the strategic division of labor and my limited clearance level, I couldn’t begin to tell you what I was drawing.

LEAD PROGRAMMER • I worked with Walgreens to create a simulator that mimicked their new product inventory application, that allowed them to teach their employees the new system in a non-destructive environment.

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR • I taught World Book’s graphic design staff long document publishing using Adobe FrameMaker. I was and am one of the few Adobe instructors in the country who can teach this application.
