This was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. Allen Interactions found me and recruited me from New Horizons to teach instructional design. While I was employed by Computing Solutions, I was trained in an exotic software application called “Authorware”, which was used to create instructional design applications. Computer-based instruction became a passion of mine, and led me jobs I later had developing simulators and training applications.
Applications Trained
I taught no Adobe applications at Allen Interactions. As their name implies, they taught their students programming. Even in a city the size of Chicago, there are some apps that are so specialized that there just aren’t many people available that are qualified to teach them. Authorware was one of them. When it became known that I taught Authorware, they reached out to me, made me an offer, and I gladly accepted. Teaching programming was a really welcome change. And it exposed me to a number of high-profile companies that liked my work as an instructor and offered me job opportunities.
I also had the opportunity to teach another really exotic application, Corel Painter. This is a really misunderstood program. It occupies a unique niche in the design market as a tool for fine artists, but it can be used to design assets for graphic and web design. And Allen Interactions was literally the only place in the city of Chicago to get the training I provided.
